Disappointing Sunday for Fieten Olie Racing GP in Austria after strong weekend by Van den Goorbergh
Zonta van den Goorbergh finished 22nd in the Moto2 race at the Red Bull Ring on Sunday afternoon. The Dutchman had a good opening phase and was riding in the points until he had a small crash. The 17-year-old rider was able to continue his race and with a strong pace he eventually managed to finish in 22nd place.
After Barry Baltus was declared unfit on Saturday morning, Zonta van den Goorbergh was the only one representing the Fieten Olie Racing GP team for the rest of the weekend at the Red Bull Ring. Starting from thirteenth on the grid, Van den Goorbergh had to give up two places on the opening lap but then managed to keep up well with the pace of the riders fighting for the points.
In the fourth lap, however, things went wrong for Van den Goorbergh with a small slip-off after which he was able to pick up the bike again and continue his way. In the remaining part of the race, the 17-year-old rider managed to show an impressive pace, proving once again that he has made a step forward after the British Grand Prix. In the end, Van den Goorbergh crossed the finish line in 22nd place, a result that did not reflect the progress made.
Zonta van den Goorbergh – P22: “It was a huge shame that I went down in the race today. But other than that, I am happy with the race I did today. After my crash I was constantly setting the lap times of the drivers in the top ten. With that pace and the many dropouts, a similar position would definitely have been possible. There were many crashes so it didn’t take much but that doesn’t make it any different for us. Anyway, I am happy with how this weekend went, we were fast from the beginning. We have to keep that positive thought and then we’ll go full steam ahead again in Barcelona.”
Jarno Janssen – Fieten Olie Racing GP team manager: “”The weekend in Austria is over again and it didn’t end as we had hoped. Still, overall it was a very good race weekend, perhaps his best so far. We would have liked to have seen that rewarded with points but unfortunately that didn’t happen. Still, we have clearly seen a big step from Zonta and if he continues like this we are on the right track. In addition, it was also very unfortunate that Barry was not at the start but let’s make sure we can take the next step in Barcelona.”
The next Grand Prix will be held in the weekend of September 1-3 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
