Baltus and Van den Goorbergh both score points in Moto2 race at Motorland Aragón
Barry Baltus and Zonta van den Goorbergh both scored points for RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP in the Moto2 race at Motorland Aragón on Sunday afternoon. In tricky conditions at the Spanish circuit, Baltus crossed the line in 13th place and Van den Goorbergh crossed the finish line in 14th.
After a qualifying session that was not quite what the team and riders had hoped for, RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP still went into the Moto2 race at Motorland Aragón with confidence. Both riders had shown several times during the weekend that they had good race pace.
Starting from 22nd on the grid, Baltus got away well and moved up to 17th position on the very first lap. The Belgian rider then moved up to 16th position before duelling for a place in the top fifteen for almost the entire race. Baltus eventually managed to make up three more positions in the closing stages, crossing the line in thirteenth place and scoring three world championship points. They are his first points since the Portuguese Grand Prix and with a total of 26 Baltus is now 18th in the championship.
Starting from eighteenth on the grid, Van den Goorbergh had a difficult opening lap where he found himself riding well outside top 20. The 18-year-old Dutchman did not give up the fight and moved further and further forward throughout the race. In the end, he managed to add two world championship points to his total by crossing the finish line in fourteenth place. With 20 points, Van den Goorbergh now holds 22nd position in the championship.
Barry Baltus – P13: “It was quite a good race today. From 22nd on the grid this was a good result and we couldn’t have done a lot more. I made some small mistakes which I need to improve on in the future. I am happy to be back inside the points and now we need to keep building from here on.”
Zonta van den Goorbergh – P14: “It wasn’t a bad race. In the first lap I was still down to 26th place so coming back to fourteenth position is okay but I’m not satisfied. The race pace was good but in the Moto2 class it is just very difficult to move further forward when you lose positions at the start. This was not the result I had hoped for but some things beyond our control prevented that. Anyway, we go on to Misano in good spirits.”
Jarno Janssen – RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP team manager: “In the end, we ended up in positions where we wanted to end up with both riders, and that is inside the points. It is a reasonable result after a difficult weekend in which we made the most of it. Barry and Zonta both managed to pay attention to their tyres and managed to take advantage of that at the end of the race. The pace remained constant and we managed to finish the race well with that. With both riders in the points we can be satisfied and it also gives some confidence after a few difficult weeks. Now we’re on to Misano.”
The next Grand Prix will take place next weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli from 6 to 8 September.
